Project
Graduation Invite, Print Futures

Objective
Design a portfolio show invite card to be reviewed by a panel of judges and chosen as that year's theme.

Outcome
I was pleasantly surprised when my design won the invite design challenge. The design differed greatly from any of the other submissions and I thought it might be a bit too bright. Despite strong competition from fellow classmates, my design went on to be professionally printed; then, printed cards and posters were distributed and digital renditions were sent en masse online.

Magazine

Project
Magazine Mock-Up, Focus & Frame

Objective
Practice desktop layout and publishing while creating something that is visually stimulating and readable.

Outcome
Because this was a mock-up, I was free to try out some unconventional ideas that might otherwise be rejected in a published magazine. I could have designed a stronger Focus & Frame logo (it gets a bit lost in the busy background) and the borders might be a bit on the thick side. However, I think the highlight in this project was the Nikon advertisement on page 7. My instructor had similar comments, but said the project was "very lively, with some strong layout ideas."

Project
Personal Website, www.laurakelsey.com

Objective
Create and maintain pages for the web that accurately reflect and promote my business and personal projects.

Outcome
I think Laurakelsey.com was a valiant first effort in website making. The design was interesting but the functuality and user-friendliness needed work. The background stands out, with the trees and their reflections/roots drawing the reader's eye down the page. Showing all the portfolio photos as large thumbnails on one page with no text wasn't the best set-up choice, but the variety of images was interesting. The page titles - Script, Sight, Sounds - use alliteration, something that will be carried over to the next incarnation of the website (in progress Fall 2010).

Project
Branding, Words & More

Objective
Establish an effective branding design that defines Words & More.

Outcome
The brand "look" for Words & More was ready before the name of the business was finalized. Did I go with my name or do I provide services under a business name? When I decided that I wanted a name other than my own, designs had to be made! Click the flower to the left to see what I came up with.
